Over 50's 2nd XI Reports 2016 |
April 27th 2016
A cold and chilly day at Boston for the o50s first warm up game away to Lincolnshire. Lincs won the toss and opted to bat, at least partly one suspects so only two of them were going to be cold at once! The Norfolk opening bowlers struggled initially, Chris Barnham having problems staying on his feet on his follow through and Andy Gregory bowling some wides to the left handed openers as the ball swung considerably. Both gradually exerted some control and then got a wicket each, Lawrence de Coteau taking a neat slip catch. After a tidy over of left arm spin from debutant Mark Pepper, the increasingly ominous clouds opened and off we went with Lincs 48-2 after 13. Rain turned to hail and then sleet and after an early tea the game had to be abandoned.

Norfolk arrived in Sudbury for a game of 40 overs a side cricket against a very well balanced Suffolk side. The weather was fine but forecast to come pouring down later in the day. Alan - skipper for the day - won the toss and decided to bat. Doug Young lost his wicket very early and was left to Lawrence De Coteau and Alan Lithins to create as best partnership as they could. Some of the tightest bowling on a slow low wicket made run getting very difficult and Norfolk found themselves 35/1 after20 overs. With 66 on the board De Coteau lost his wicket for a very patient 30 bringing Daryl Godbold to the crease. The run rate increased with Alan and Daryl scampering a few runs where perhaps Lawrence couldn’t :). Daryl scampered for one too many and was run out for a very quick 8. Bryn Clarke joined Lithins and soon departed. Lithins had reached his 50 by this stage but was running out of overs and Suffolk continuing their fine bowling performance. Mark Pepper joined Lithins for a few lusty blows and quick runs with Lithins losing his wicket to the last ball of the innings trying to amass as many runs as possible. Norfolk finished on 109/6. Suffolks best bowling came from Wlkins - 8-0-9-4
Looming weather meant Suffolk were not going to bide their time and went about attacking the bowling with much gusto.Graham Taylor and Gary Hinchcliffe bowled good lines but saw the ball slipping past the fielders at regular intervals. With not many runs to defend, quick bowling changes were made bringing on slow leftarmer Mark Pepper and Paul Hodds who made a good quick impact and saw Norfolk get their first wicket with Lithins taking a good close catch behind the stumps. A few more lusty blows from the Suffolk batsmen saw them close to the target and the weather closing in even quicker. A sharp stumping from Lithins saw Pepper pick up his first wicket but with only 4 more needed by suffolk it did not take long for the sides to shake hands and suffolk gain a good win.

All in all a good day out to stretch the winter muscles and a few players getting some good practise for the coming season. The weather did not look promising for Norfolk o50s warm up game with Two Counties at Kelvedon, but we started on time on what turned out to be a nice day. Norfolk won the toss, and looking at the slightly green wicket and damp outfield, decided to bowl first. In truth the Kelvedon ground staff had done a very good job to produce a dry, even wicket given the weather leading up to the game. Norfolk bowled tightly, fielded well and caught everything that was on offer, including a spectacular effort from debutant Rodger Carpenter. Wickets fell at regular intervals, the main damage being done by the spin twins, Mark Pepper and Lawrence de Coteau. Scoring was always hard, and Two Counties closed on 111-9 after 40 overs. The Norfolk reply began cautiously, especially as ex-Norfolk Seniors player Kevin Ross was opening the bowling. At drinks the total was 37-2 off 20, but quick twenties from Rodger Carpenter, Bryn Clarke and Lawrence de Coteau saw us home in the 39th over without too much concern. The umpires selected Lawrence as man of the match for his 3-20 and 28no.
