Norfolk Over 50’s 2nds – 2013
This season the Over 50’s 2nds played Lincs. at Boston and Mundford, Two Counties at Old Buckenham and Frinton, Medite at Easton in Suffolk.
Lincs v Norfolk 24/4/13
Lincs use this game as a trial for their first team squad and we played league rules, 45 overs. Batting first they scored 194 for 6 with two wickets for Neil Wynn and one each for Richard Larner, M Annear, B Eagleton and Bryn Clark with the attack led by Mark Lester with 5 overs for just 4 runs.
Norfolk’s reply started well with an opening partnership of 70 with Alec Toll (50) and Ben Collinson (35) leading the way. Unfortunately the rate then dropped and Norfolk were unable to pick up the scoring with just 2 more boundaries finishing on a disappointing 134 for 8.
Norfolk v Two Counties 15/5/13
Norfolk had the honours batting first after losing a crucial toss, and struggled to 122 for 9 on a difficult Old Buckenham wicket with Dave Bowker leading the way with 43 having found his bat in the loft. The middle order support from B Clarke (18) and A Bryan (16) were the other main contributors.
In reply J Stuck batted carefully for a well made 43 supported by S Marks (37) which was enough of a platform for the total to be reached in just 34 overs for the loss of just 4 wickets with Les Able picking up 2 for 18.
Two Counties v Norfolk 18/6/13
As always a pleasure to play at Frinton-on-Sea, Norfolk batted first and a solid opening partnership of 39 with A Toll (23) setting things up for Mick Cusack (22) and an excellent debut innings of 83 by Chris Upton despite some early misunderstandings with Mick running between the wickets. The unusual tail of John Ruddick and Robin Yates added another 37 to bring up a respectable total of 198 for 8.
At tea the skipper asked Chris Upton if he would like to bowl whilst still warm so he unexpectedly found himself opening the bowling with N Wynn and they both kept it tight before the change bowlers of R Yates, R Eagleton and B Clarke battled bravely to keep the required rate above 5. Indeed the game remained in the balance with 17 needed off the last 3 overs and with 6 required off the last over with only one wicket left, Norfolk were hopeful of victory but 2C’s got home with 2 balls to spare. This was a thoroughly enjoyable game, played in a good spirit.
Medite v Norfolk 7/8/13
Another excellent venue at Easton in Suffolk, Norfolk chose to bat with a strong batting line up with two new debutants of Mark Pepper and Robin Mail and welcome returns for Eddie Weber and Kevin Denmark. Bryn Clarke opened with Ben Collinson and Bryn went on to score a good 39 supported by Adrian Bryan (20) and a top innings of 50 by Mick Cusack. Colin Whurr (21) batting at 8 scored valuable runs and helped the side to a total of 199 for 7.
After another excellent tea N Wynn and R Mail opened the bowling against the stylish S Halliday who accumulated his runs effortlessly against the medium pace but was eventually dismissed by the quicker delivery of Eddie Weber for a well made 72. Mark Pepper showed what a quality slow left arm bowler could do with 33 for 1 off 9 supported by B Clarke with a solid 9 overs for 36. All this meant that it was a very tight game, and with 29 needed off the last 3 overs Norfolk really should have won but some loose deliveries and a large outfield meant there were plenty of runs about. Medite kept their composure and managed to secure a tie finishing level on 199 losing 5 wickets.
Norfolk v Lincs 21/8/13
Mundford CC hosted the final game again and after the epic match last year when two players scored in excess of 150, much was expected of this fixture. Norfolk chose to bat on another hot day and again A Toll scored well for his 41. Eddie Weber hit a 4 and 6 off his first two balls but fell to some wily bowling from G Clay who picked up 4 wickets. So it was left to the lower middle order to get a reasonable total and Bryn Clarke with 42, R Yates with a hard hitting 56 including 12 fours and support from Bob Eagleton with 20 got the score up to 236 for 7.
Lincs who were without 4 of their first team top 6 introduced 2 new players and both did well with the bat to get them ahead of the rate. Norfolk’s bowling was probably one bowler light but an excellent opening spell of 9 overs, 3 for 26 from Les Able set things up well. Mark Pepper and Eddie Weber both bowled well without much luck and the innings of G Clay of 60 not out sealed the victory for Lincs, winning by 5 wickets with 2 overs to spare.
Although the team were not as successful this year as previously, they were involved in some excellent tight games which were very enjoyable. My thanks to Mike Banham for sorting out the fixtures and for his support and also to the players, umpires, scorers and clubs who provide the grounds and excellent teas, without whom it would not be possible to play.
